The Sense-Maker

The Durable

One of 18 archetypes in the AI Vulnerability Study

menu_bookUnderstanding This Archetype

The Sense-Maker's work is fundamentally about creating meaning from ambiguity. Strategy development, complex analysis, creative direction, research synthesis, policy formulation. These activities require holding multiple conflicting inputs, applying judgment about what matters, and producing a coherent narrative or framework from incomplete information. This is among the most deeply human cognitive functions and the most resistant to AI automation.

AI can accelerate many of the inputs to sense-making. It can summarize research, surface patterns in data, generate alternative framings, and draft preliminary analyses. These capabilities make the Sense-Maker faster but do not make them replaceable. The core act of deciding what the data means, choosing which patterns are signal and which are noise, and constructing a narrative that moves an organization forward remains beyond current AI capabilities.

The Sense-Maker's advantage is structural. Sense-making requires integrating tacit knowledge, political awareness, organizational history, and domain expertise in ways that resist decomposition into automatable subtasks. Each sense-making exercise is a novel synthesis that draws on a unique combination of inputs. AI can contribute components, but the assembly is human.

The trajectory for this archetype is expansive rather than defensive. As AI makes more data available and more preliminary analyses possible, the demand for sense-making increases. The person who can look at ten AI-generated analyses and determine which one captures the essential truth is more valuable in an AI-rich environment than in a pre-AI environment. The Sense-Maker should use AI to expand the range of inputs they can synthesize, pushing the boundaries of what one person can comprehend and integrate.

layersThe Durable

The Durable archetypes are defined by work patterns that AI augments rather than replaces. Their roles depend on coordination across boundaries, tacit knowledge, relationship capital, and the ability to synthesize meaning from ambiguity. These are not merely skills that AI cannot replicate today; they are capabilities that resist automation structurally because they depend on context, trust, and human judgment operating together. People in this category should not be complacent, but their strategic position is fundamentally different from those in The Exposed. The opportunity is to use AI as leverage to extend their reach and impact rather than to defend against displacement.

The Durable sits at the low end of the Vulnerability Index (typically 10 to 40), representing roles with the strongest structural defenses against AI displacement. The Transitioning category sits adjacent, representing roles moving toward durability.

exploreDimensional Pattern

The Sense-Maker's dimensional profile shows elevated scores across Novel, Tacit, and Curation dimensions, reflecting work anchored in synthesis and judgment.

Creation vs. Curation
Leans Curation

Sense-making is more curatorial than creative: it involves selecting, interpreting, and synthesizing existing information rather than generating new outputs from scratch.

CreationCuration
Routine vs. Novel
Strongly Novel

Every sense-making exercise is fundamentally novel. The inputs, context, and required synthesis are unique to each situation. This is the strongest Novel score among Durable archetypes.

RoutineNovel
Individual vs. Coordination
Slightly Coordination

Sense-making involves both deep individual thinking and collaborative input gathering and narrative testing. The slight coordination lean reflects the need to validate sense-making with others.

IndividualCoordination
Explicit vs. Tacit
Strongly Tacit

Sense-making draws heavily on experiential knowledge, pattern recognition from past situations, and contextual understanding that resists documentation. The strong Tacit score is a primary durability driver.

ExplicitTacit

This archetype is assigned when Routine/Novel scores 60 or higher, Explicit/Tacit scores 60 or higher, Creation/Curation scores 55 or higher, and the Vulnerability Index is 35 or below. The convergence of high Novel and high Tacit scores with low vulnerability captures the deep synthesis nature of this role.

routeRecommended Actions

These actions help the Sense-Maker leverage AI to expand their synthesis capacity while maintaining the human judgment core.

speedVulnerability Range

The Vulnerability Index runs from 0 (fully durable, work structurally resists AI) to 100 (fully exposed, core tasks are within current AI capability). This archetype scores between 0 and 100.

0 — Durable 100 — Exposed

A Vulnerability Index of 15 to 35 places the Sense-Maker in the low-vulnerability range. The score reflects work that is structurally resistant to AI automation because it depends on novel synthesis, tacit knowledge, and contextual judgment. AI makes this role more powerful, not more threatened.

boltAI Adoption Study

Sense-Makers frequently appear as Research Accelerators or Data Sense-Makers in the AI Adoption study. They use AI tools to expand their analytical reach, processing more data and generating more preliminary analyses than would be possible without AI, while maintaining human judgment over the final synthesis.

settingsStructural Friction Study

In the Structural Friction study, Sense-Makers often appear as Systems Thinkers or Deep Experts. Their ability to synthesize complex inputs naturally extends to understanding and navigating organizational complexity, seeing patterns in friction that others experience as noise.
